{"id":10767,"date":"2016-09-07T19:12:27","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T19:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bretadamsltd.net\/content\/"},"modified":"2023-02-22T20:42:54","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T20:42:54","slug":"charlayne-woodard","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bretadamsltd.net\/content\/client\/actors\/charlayne-woodard\/","title":{"rendered":"Charlayne Woodard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bretadamsltd.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Charlayne.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-14084\" title=\"Charlayne\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bretadamsltd.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Charlayne-160x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Charlayne Woodard \u2013 Playwright &amp; Actress<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Charlayne Woodard is a two-time Obie Award winner and Tony Award nominee.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Playwright<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ms. Woodard\u2019s new two-character play, <em>The Garden<\/em>, a commission of the LaJolla Playhouse, has productions scheduled in 2021 at both Baltimore Center Stage and The LaJolla Playhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Her first solo play, <em>Pretty Fire<\/em>, was produced at the Fountainhead Theatre in Los Angeles, where it received LA Drama Critics and NAACP awards for best play and best playwright; Manhattan Theatre Club; Seattle Rep (directed by Dan Sullivan); and the La Jolla Playhouse (directed by Michael Greif).<\/p>\n<p>Her second solo play, <em>Neat<\/em>, was developed at Seattle Rep, and subsequently produced at Manhattan Theatre Club, where it received the Irving and Blanche Laurie Theatre Vision Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination; Seattle Rep and the Mark Taper Forum (both directed by Dan Sullivan), where the play received a Backstage West Garland Award.<\/p>\n<p>Her third solo play, <em>In Real Life<\/em>, was a co-commission by Center Theatre Group and Seattle Rep, and developed at the Sundance Theatre Lab.\u00a0 <em>In Real Life<\/em> (directed by Dan Sullivan) was produced at: Seattle Rep; the Mark Taper Forum, where the play received a Backstage West Garland Award and NAACP Awards for best playwright and actor; and Manhattan Theatre Club, where Ms. Woodard received an Audelco Award and was nominated for Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for best solo performance.<\/p>\n<p>Her fourth solo play, <em>The Night Watcher<\/em>, was developed at the Ojai Playwrights\u2019 Conference and the La Jolla Playhouse\u2019s Page To The Stage. <em>The Night Watcher, <\/em>directed by Dan Sullivan<em>,<\/em> was produced at Seattle Rep; Primary Stages; and the Kirk Douglas Theatre, where the play received LA Drama Critics and NAACP Awards for best solo performance, as well as nominations from both for best play.<\/p>\n<p><em>Flight<\/em>, Ms. Woodard\u2019s multi-character adaptation of African and African-American folktales, was commissioned by Center Theatre Group.\u00a0 Productions include the Lincoln Museum, Springfield, IL; Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles; and ACT in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>Her plays are published by Dramatists Play Service and performed at regional theatres around the country; and audio versions are available at Audible.com.<br \/>\nMs. Woodard\u2019s ten-minute play, <em>Phenom<\/em>, was performed as part of the Car Plays series produced by the LaJolla Playhouse. <em>Grace<\/em> a solo musical, written with Kristin Childs, was commissioned and produced by Inner Voices in New York City.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Actress<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Broadway, Ms. Woodard was nominated for Tony and Drama Desk Awards for her role in the original company of the hit musical, <em>Ain\u2019t Misbehavin\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 She reprised her role at\u00a0<a title=\"Her Majesty's Theatre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Her_Majesty%27s_Theatre\">Her Majesty&#8217;s Theatre<\/a> in London\u2019s West End; the Los Angeles\u00a0production, produced by Center Theater Group at the \u00a0Aquarius Theater<em>;<\/em> and, ten years after the Broadway opening, the Broadway revival with original cast. \u00a0NBC taped and broadcast the hit musical with the original Broadway cast; and, RCA recorded the original cast.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Woodard also appeared in the Broadway revival of Hair, directed by Tom O\u2019Horgan.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Woodard\u2019s off-Broadway theatre credits include <em>Daddy<\/em> by Jeremy O. Harris and directed by Danya Taymor for The New Group and received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination; <em>Hamlet<\/em> (Gertrude) directed by Sam Gold at the Public Theater; <em>War <\/em>by Brandon-Jacobs Jenkins\u00a0 and directed by Liliana Blain-Cruz at Lincoln Center; the revival of <em>The Substance of Fire<\/em> by John Robin Baitz, directed by Trip Cullman at Second Stage;<em> The Witch of Edmonton<\/em> directed by Jesse Berger at the Red Bull Theatre Company (Obie Award); world premieres of <em>In The Blood<\/em> by Suzan-Lori Parks, directed by David Esbjornson at the Public Theater (Obie Award); F<em>abulation<\/em> by Lynn Nottage, directed by Kate Whorisky at Playwright\u2019s Horizons; <em>Stunning<\/em> by David Adjmi at LCT3; <em>Sorrows and Rejoicings<\/em> written and directed by Athol Fugard at Second Stage (Audelco Award); and <em>The Caucasian Chalk Circle<\/em> directed by George C.
