Rick Edinger <\/strong>(he\/they) is a proud queer AAPI music director, educator, vocal coach, pianist, and actor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger started the 2021-2022 season as Music Director for the world premiere of Tom Kitt, Brian Yorkey, and Kwame Kwei-Armah\u2019s The Visitor<\/em> at The Public Theater in New York<\/a> (Daniel Sullivan, director; Lorin Latarro, choreographer) starring David Hyde Pierce and Ari\u2019el Stachel.  Additionally, Edinger was Music Director\/ Keys for New City Music Theatre\u2019s inaugural production of Songs for a New World<\/em><\/a> at Radial Park in New York (Miles J. Sternfeld, director; Ahmad Simmons, choreographer) starring Nancy Opel, Liz Callaway, Bonnie Milligan, Christy Altomare, MK Morrissey, Bre Jackson, Ximone Rose, Grace Stockdale, Jason Gotay, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Michael James Scott, Kyle Taylor Parker, et al.  In late fall 2021, Edinger music directed a developmental reading and industry presentation of Mizer and Moore\u2019s new musical, The Amazing Mr. X<\/em><\/a>, starring Kate Baldwin, Krystina Alabado,  Alexander Gemignani, & Nik Walker.  In spring 2022, he will music direct Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama\u2019s spring production of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812<\/em><\/a> with director\/ choreographer Tom\u00e9 Cousin. Edinger will close the season as music director of the highly anticipated premier of Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner\u2019s Trading Spaces <\/em>directed by Kenny Leon at Alliance Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. In summer 2022, Rick will music direct the pre-Broadway workshop of Joy<\/em> by AnnMarie Milazzo and Ken Davenport (Andy Einhorn, music supervisor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger serves as Associate Professor of Musical Theater\/ Vocal Coach\/ Music Director at Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama. For the School of Drama, Edinger has served as Music Director on Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens, Cabaret <\/em>(dir. Tom\u00e9 Cousin),<\/em> Into the Woods <\/em>(dir. Matthew Gardiner), <\/em>and HAIR<\/em> (dir. Jason A. Sparks), as well as Vocal Coach\/ Music Advisor for A\/B Machines.  <\/em>Edinger also proudly co-chairs the CMU School of Drama\u2019s Diversity & Inclusion committee with colleague, Tom\u00e9 Cousin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger recently served as Music Director for Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre\u2019s productions of Hairspray <\/em>and Newsies. <\/em>He gives masterclasses in musical theatre throughout the United States and serves on faculty for ArtsBridge, The College Audition Conservatory, and The Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute. In the 2016-2017 season, he served as vocal director for Hunter Opera Theatre\u2019s performance of Kristin Chenoweth\u2019s My Love Letter to Broadway <\/em>at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. He has been a guest music director at New York University Tisch School of the Performing Arts and served on faculty at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University, The County College of Morris, and The College of Saint Elizabeth. Other institutions and projects include ArtsBridge, The City University of New York- Hunter College & Brooklyn College, Bronx Opera, Co\u00f3pera: Project Opera of Manhattan, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse (The Rev), Mount Washington Valley Theatre Company, The Talent Company, and many more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger frequently works as a collaborative pianist with Broadway performers and singers from the Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, and more. As a vocal coach in New York for nearly 20 years, Edinger\u2019s former and current clients have performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, on national\/ international tours, and in regional houses across the globe. He maintains a private studio as vocal coach in New York & Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger is in the process of writing and editing his first book, The National Alliance for Musical Theatre\u2019s Nuts & Bolts Guide to Producing New Musicals<\/em>. As a strong advocate for the development of new works, he plays a large role in the National Alliance for Musical Theatre\u2019s (NAMT) annual endeavors and has served on the NAMT Board of Directors since May 2021.  For the National Alliance for Musical Theatre\u2019s annual Festival of New Musicals, Rick has served as consultant on MAYA<\/em> by Cheeyang Ng & Eric Sorrels, Hart Island <\/em>by Danny Larsen and Michelle Elliott (directed by Raja Feather Kelly), The River Is Me<\/em> by Troy Anthony and Sukari Jones (directed by Schele Williams) and Interstate<\/em> by Melissa Li and Kit Yan (directed by Jesca Prudencio).  In the upcoming season, Edinger will serve as a consultant on the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera (PCLO) New Works Literary Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His children\u2019s musical, Alice, <\/em>written in collaboration with Joe Barros (Artistic Director, New York Theatre Barn) and based on Lewis Carroll\u2019s Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland<\/em>, recently debuted at Weathervane Playhouse (VT) in summer 2018 and played a sold-out run in New York with Out of the Box Theatrics.  The Out of the Box Theatrics production of Alice<\/em> was recognized by the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society was recognized as a \u201cStandout Moment\u201d of the 2018-2019 theatre season for its immersive environment that featured a cast of actors with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger began his career as an actor, appearing in the 2004 Tony nominated Broadway revival of Pacific Overtures <\/em>(dir. Amon Miyamoto) and the Broadway benefit concert production of Children and Art: A Tribute to Stephen Sondheim on the Eve of his 75th Birthday <\/em>(dir. Richard Maltby, Jr.). Regionally, he has performed in Symphony Space\u2019s Wall to Wall Sondheim<\/em>, Roundabout Theatre   Company\u2019s 40th Anniversary Gala at Chelsea Piers, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Mount Washington Valley Theatre Company, and many houses across the United States and Europe. His television appearances include As the World Turns<\/em>, Love Monkey<\/em>, and Starved. <\/em>He has also been featured on the 2004 Broadway revival recording of Pacific Overtures<\/em> with PS CLASSICS and Wall to Wall Sondheim <\/em>with XM SATELLITE RADIO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinger trained at Manhattan School of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, Brooklyn College, and Hunter College. He has studied piano with Gerardo Teissonniere and Geoffrey Burleson and studied voice with Mignon Dunn, Joan Caplan, and Maitland Peters. He is a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians (Local 802), Actors\u2019 Equity Association, the Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Television & Radio Artists, and Musicians United for Social Equity.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
